Audio Tour
In June 2006, Spring Street School students in Mrs. Ganas' third grade class were studying the history of their home town, Shrewsbury, Massachusetts. Students went on their usual field trip, took pictures and researched places they visited. Instead of writing reports, teachers and students decided there should be a global presence. As a result, students created an audio tour of historic Shrewsbury, MA and posted it to the web for all to enjoy.
In this audio tour, you will hear the voices of the students who created this tour. They also wanted to incorporate oral history by interviewing other members of the community. This audio tour includes the voices of three people, Dr. James Smith, a retired teacher who has done extensive research about Artemas Ward, Beverly Fisher, a longtime town resident, and Bill Glascock, the third owner of the Sumner House, a bed and breakfast that has since been converted to a funeral home.
Dr. James Smith speaks to us as if he were Artemas Ward. It's fascinating to listen to him tell us about the General and the Artemas Ward house itself. You can view pictures and hear Dr. James Smith's audio by clicking here. You can learn more about the Artemas Ward Home Museum by clicking here.
One hot June day in 2006, Beverly Fischer walked to Spring Street School in Shrewsbury bringing with her several old photographs of the town. She wanted us to include them in the website. These were scanned, so students and others could see how Shrewsbury looked several years ago. You can see these photographs by clicking here. Not only did Mrs. Fisher share her photographs, she also shared her memories of what it was like to be a student in the old brick schoolhouse. If you would like to hear Mrs. Fisher's speak about Shrewsbury and her school days, click here.
Bill Glascock speaks about what it was like to be the third owner of what was then called the Sumner House (presently Heald and Chiampa Funeral Home). He shares some stories with us and tells us about the historical significance of this building. You can see pictures of the Sumner House and hear his audio by clicking here.
